National Blind Children's Society

Our Mission, Vision and Work

Mission

Our mission is to enable blind and partially sighted children and young people to achieve their educational and recreational goals.

Vision

Our vision is a world where blind and partially sighted children have an equal opportunity to the provision of education, which is adequately supported with sources of information provided in a suitable format for their needs, and where there are no barriers to sports and recreational activities.

Our Work

The National Blind Children's Society’s objective is to enable children and young people with visual impairment to achieve their educational and recreational goals.  Our vision is a world where children with a visual impairment have an equal opportunity to the provision of education, which is adequately supported with sources of information provided in a suitable format for their needs and where there are no barriers to sports and recreational activities.  We offer help and support from the moment a child is diagnosed, usually at birth, through each key stage of their education to the age of twenty-five.

By working in collaboration with other organisations and professionals associated with visual impairment NBCS offer five ‘Key Services’ which are provided either free or at a nominal charge these are:

- Family Support & Information – Immediate and ongoing 'one-stop' emotional and specialist support from first diagnosis.

- Educational Advocacy – Expert advice and representation to ensure the child receives the most suitable education in the correct environment.

- CustomEyes Books – Large-print fact and popular fiction titles, annuals, school texts and revision guides tailormade to the specific needs of individual children.

- Specialist Equipment – Personalised ICT, sensory and other specialist equipment to help children participate fully in the modern world and achieve their potential at home and school.

- Recreational Activities – A nationwide programme of day and weekend family events, socialising, holiday and adventure activities.

The National Blind Children’s Society relies on voluntary donations from individuals, companies and grant-making trusts. We do not receive any statutory funding at all.
